Take your heart for a walk today

The Kingston Walks Initiative

Kingston Walks is a project of the Community Heart Health Coalition of Ulster County. The goal of this project is to increase the amount of time that people who live in Ulster County spend walking or engaging in other physical activity.

Why Walk?

  • Helps with weight loss
  • Improves heart health
  • Strengthens your muscles, bones heart and lungs
  • Makes you feel better
  • Helps you to handle stress
  • Helps to control blood pressure and diabetes
  • Helps to lower the risk of colon and breast cancer
  • Gives you energy and sparkle

Walking dos's and don'ts

  • Do explore your neighborhood for safe and pretty walking sites.
  • Do put walking at the top of your to-do list.
  • Do wear comfortable shoes.
  • Do keep a pair of white sweat socks in your briefcase or pocketbook and comfortable shoes in your car, desk or locker at work.
  • Do meet a friend for a walk.
  • Do keep a water bottle handy.
  • Do wear white or reflective clothes if you walk at night.
  • Do protect yourself from the sun.
  • Don’t carry hand weights when your walk
    (keeping fists clenched can raise blood pressure).
  • Don’t wear dark clothes if you walk at night.
  • Don’t walk where you feel unsafe.
